Local Knowledge & Surf Guide

Local Knowledge

Ning Nong Point and Reef in The Wairarapa is an exposed reef and point break that has quite consistent surf, although summer tends to be mostly flat. The best conditions occur when a South swell, consisting of a mix of groundswells and windswells, combines with an offshore wind direction from the Northeast. There is no beach break at this location; instead, it features both a left-hand reef break and a left-hand point break that are surfable at all stages of the tide. It very rarely gets crowded here, though surfers should be cautious of submerged rocks. The best time of year for surfing Ning Nong Point and Reef with consistent, clean waves is during autumn, particularly the month of April.
