Local Knowledge
Wharariki Beach on the North West Coast is an exposed beach break that has very consistent surf and works all year round. The best conditions occur when a Northwest swell (a mix of groundswells and windswells) combines with an offshore wind direction from the South, though the spot also works well with Southeast winds and West-southwest swells. The beach offers both left and right-hand waves and is unlikely to be too crowded, even when the surf is up. Surfers should take care to avoid rips and rocks at this location. The best time of year for surfing with consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of June.
