The Washout at Folly Beach is a highly renowned beach-break shaped by rock groins and shifting sandbars, known for producing fast, peaky waves and holding swell better than other local breaks. It performs best in fall and spring, with a preference for mid to high tide, especially when southeast swells arrive alongside clean north or northwest winds. The waves here can be heavy and powerful, favored by intermediates and advanced surfers—but beginners may find nearby pier spots gentler. The lineup can get busy when conditions fire, so expect competition for waves. Common hazards include strong rip currents and underwater rock groins.
