Cherry Grove Pier in South Carolina is an exposed beach break that rarely works, with summer providing the best conditions. Offshore winds come from the north-northwest, but there’s no shelter from cross-shore breezes. Most surf is generated by groundswells, with the ideal swell direction from the southeast. The beach offers both left and right-hand waves and is rarely crowded due to its location. Hazards include strong rips, undertow, and sharks. The best surf occurs when southeast swells combine with north-northwest winds. Autumn, especially November, offers the most consistent clean waves.
