Elbow Ledge in Rhode Island is a fairly exposed reef break that works best with offshore winds from the north-northwest. It receives both groundswells and windswells, with the ideal swell direction coming from the south. Good surf can be found at all stages of the tide, and the spot rarely gets crowded due to its location. Surfers should be cautious of rips, undertow, man-made hazards like buoys, and sharks. The best conditions occur during winter, especially in November, when a south swell combines with offshore winds from the north-northwest for consistent clean waves.
