Local Knowledge
Black Rock Point in Rhode Island is an exposed reef break that produces powerful, long, and often hollow waves, attracting experienced surfers—best conditions typically occur in fall when hurricane swells arrive. Offshore northwest to west winds groom south and southeast swells, delivering long, fast walls with occasional barrels. The spot favors mid to high tide, which provides better shape and reduces the risk of hitting the shallow reef. Crowds are generally light, but the entry and exit can be tricky due to slippery rocks and urchins. Strong currents and sharp reef make it a challenging but rewarding wave for skilled riders. The best surf is usually in September and October.
