San Juan is a quality left-hand reef break that typically offers rideable waves when swell energy is present, breaking over a large, uneven reef with a classic peak that peels into long lefts and occasional rights. The wave works best with steady swell from the north and northwest and lighter winds, and it’s generally best surfed at mid to high tide to avoid the shallow inside reef that can suck dry at low tide. While conditions can vary and the spot is better suited to intermediate to advanced surfers with reef experience, San Juan can deliver clean, well-shaped waves when conditions align. The best month to surf San Juan for consistent swell and cleaner conditions is December.
