Local Knowledge & Surf Guide
Local Knowledge
Playa Ballena in Puerto Rico is a fairly exposed sandbar break that offers quite consistent surf, though it is mostly flat during the summer. The spot is equally exposed to windswells and groundswells, working best with a South swell paired with an offshore Northwest wind, which offers some shelter from West winds. The sandbar creates both lefts and rights. It is unlikely to be crowded, but dangerous rips are a significant hazard. The best time of year for consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of January.
