Caballos in Puerto Rico is an exposed break that is inconsistent, only working once in a while. The best conditions are provided by a North swell (a mix of groundswells and windswells) combined with an offshore South-Southeast wind. It is surfable at all stages of the tide and is a fairly popular wave that can sometimes get crowded. Hazards include urchins, rips, rocks, and sharks. While winter is noted as optimum, the best time for consistent clean waves is during the autumn, particularly the month of October.
