Viana do Castelo is an exposed river break in North Portugal that offers fairly consistent surf and can work year-round, with both left and right-hand waves. The most favorable conditions are a West swell (from a mix of groundswells and windswells) combined with offshore winds from the Northeast. The break provides good surf at all stages of the tide. The spot is often crowded, and surfers should be aware of dangerous rips. The best time for consistent, clean waves is typically in March.
