Tanchet, located in the surf-rich town of Les Sables-d'Olonne, is an exposed beach break known for being somewhat inconsistent, often going flat during the summer months. Unlike many of the surrounding beach breaks that offer both directions, Tanchet is characterized by mainly left-hand waves that perform best around low tide. It draws energy from an equal mix of local windswells and distant groundswells, favoring a West-southwest swell angle. Because it is centrally located and a popular local haunt, the lineup can sometimes get crowded when the waves are on. The best conditions occur when that West-southwest swell meets Northeast offshore winds, with March and the Spring season being the prime time for consistent, clean surf.
