St Kilda Beach in Dunedin is an exposed beach break that usually has waves and can be surfed year-round. The best surf occurs with a south swell and offshore winds from the north-northwest, typically during autumn—most often in May—when clean, rideable waves are most common. Groundswells and windswells are equally likely, the beach produces both left and right-hand waves, and the area is rarely crowded. Surfers should beware of strong rips and the potential presence of sharks.
