Local Knowledge
Kaka Point in the Catlins is an exposed beach break with quite consistent surf and can be surfed year-round. The best surf occurs with a south-southeast swell and offshore winds from the west-southwest, typically during winter—most often in June—when clean, rideable waves are most common. The break receives a mix of groundswells and windswells, produces both left and right-handers, and works well across all stages of the tide. The area is rarely crowded, but surfers should beware of strong rips and the potential presence of sharks.
