Local Knowledge & Surf Guide
Local Knowledge
Brighton in Otago is a reasonably exposed beach and point break that usually has waves and can work year-round. The best surf occurs with a south swell and offshore winds from the north-northwest, typically during winter—most often in June—when clean, rideable waves are most common. Windswells and groundswells are equally likely, and the beach break offers both left and right-hand waves, working best around mid tide. The lineup is rarely crowded, but surfers should take care of rocks in the lineup.
