Tarnos Plage in Nouvelle-Aquitaine is an exposed beach break that offers its most consistent surfing opportunities during the autumn and winter months, while the summer is typically flat. It performs best when a strong west or northwest swell combines with offshore winds from the east or northeast. Most of the waves arrive in the form of grounded Atlantic swells, producing a variety of left and right-hand peaks across the sandy shoreline near the mouth of the Adour River that can become extremely punchy and hollow when a solid swell is running. The surf is notably versatile and remains rideable at all stages of the tide, though it often provides the cleanest faces on a rising mid-tide. While it is a popular spot near Bayonne, the expansive nature of the beach usually allows for a manageable lineup even when the conditions are optimal. Surfers should exercise caution and stay alert for hazards such as very strong lateral currents, dangerous rips, and shifting sandbars influenced by the river's flow. The best conditions reported for surf at Tarnos Plage occur when a West-northwest swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the East-northeast.
