Local Knowledge
Le Gouyot on the Île de Ré is an exposed reef break that is notably fickle, only coming to life when the conditions align perfectly. It lacks a specific seasonal pattern, though it relies on a mix of local windswells and distant groundswells, specifically favoring a West-northwest swell angle. Despite its inconsistency, the quality of the wave means it can get crowded when it is finally working. Surfers need to be particularly cautious of the rocks in the lineup, which can be hazardous depending on the tide. The best conditions occur when that West-northwest swell meets Northeast offshore winds, with March and the Spring season providing the most frequent clean windows.
