Erretegia in Nouvelle-Aquitaine is a fairly exposed beach and reef break that offers its most consistent surfing opportunities during the autumn and winter months, while the summer is typically flat. It performs best when a strong west or northwest swell combines with offshore winds from the east or northeast. Most of the waves arrive in the form of grounded Atlantic swells, producing a variety of left and right-hand peaks across the rocky and sandy shoreline of Bidart that can become quite punchy when a solid swell is running. The surf is notably versatile and remains rideable at all stages of the tide, though it often provides the cleanest faces on a rising mid-tide. While it is a popular and scenic spot nestled below the cliffs, the layout of the peaks usually allows for a manageable lineup even when the conditions are optimal. Surfers should exercise caution and stay alert for hazards such as strong lateral currents and numerous submerged rocks that become a significant risk at lower tides. The best conditions reported for surf at Erretegia occur when a West-northwest swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the East-northeast.
