Avalanche is a fairly exposed reef break that offers its most consistent surfing opportunities during the autumn and winter months, while the summer is typically flat. It performs best when a strong west or northwest swell combines with offshore winds from the east or northeast. Most of the waves arrive in the form of grounded Atlantic swells, producing a powerful, hollow left-hand peak over the rocky reef at Guéthary that can become extremely heavy when a solid swell is running. The surf is notably versatile and remains rideable at all stages of the tide, though it often provides the cleanest faces on a rising mid-tide. While it is a legendary big wave spot, the intensity and distance from shore usually allow for a manageable lineup even when the conditions are optimal. Surfers should exercise caution and stay alert for hazards such as very strong lateral currents, submerged rocks, and the significant power of the wave which is best suited for experienced riders. The best conditions reported for surf at Avalanche occur when a West-northwest swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the East-northeast.
