Pelican Watch, located at the southern end of Pleasure Island near Fort Fisher, is a relatively quiet beach-break that benefits from shifting sandbars along a wide, open stretch of coast. It performs best in fall, especially October through November, when southeast and northeast groundswells from tropical storms or nor’easters line up with offshore winds from the west or northwest. The break offers peaky lefts and rights, with the cleanest shape generally around low to mid tide. While usually less crowded than central Carolina Beach spots, it can attract locals during good swells. Rip currents and longshore drift are common here, so surfers should stay alert when conditions are strong.
