North Buxton on Hatteras Island is an exposed beach-break that offers consistent surf thanks to its open exposure to Atlantic swells. It performs best in fall, particularly September through November, when tropical cyclones and nor’easters drive steady northeast and southeast groundswells, often shaped by offshore winds from the west. Shifting sandbars along this stretch provide peaky lefts and rights, with conditions usually best around low to mid tide. The area sees fewer surfers than Buxton’s more central spots near the lighthouse, making it a good choice for those seeking less-crowded lineups. However, rips and strong currents are common.
