Local Knowledge
Canadian Hole in Avon, Hatteras Island, is primarily famous as a windsurfing and kiteboarding destination on the Pamlico Sound, but the nearby oceanfront also offers surfable beach-breaks when conditions are favorable. Surf here performs best in fall, especially October through November, when tropical systems and nor’easters send longer-period southeast and northeast groundswells that can clean up with offshore winds from the west. Waves break over shifting sandbars, producing peaky lefts and rights that are usually best around low to mid tide, though quality is inconsistent due to rapid sand movement. This stretch is less frequented by surfers compared to Avon Pier, offering uncrowded lineups, but strong rips and changing currents remain a concern during larger swells.
