Local Knowledge
Tuhawaiki Point in South Canterbury is an exposed point break that doesn’t work very often and has no strong seasonal pattern. The best surf occurs with an east-northeast swell and offshore winds from the west, typically during winter—most often in July—when clean, rideable waves are more likely. The break receives a mix of groundswells and windswells and works best around high tide. It can sometimes get crowded, and surfers should beware of rips, rocks, local surfers, and sharks.
