Local Knowledge
Long Point in the Catlins is a reasonably exposed reef and point break with quite reliable surf that can work year-round. The best surf occurs with a south-southeast swell and offshore winds from the northeast, typically during winter—especially in August—when clean, rideable waves are most consistent. Groundswells and windswells are equally likely, and the spot features a left-hand point break that works best around low tide on a rising tide. The lineup remains relatively uncrowded even on good days, but surfers should be cautious of strong rips and the potential presence of sharks.
