Long Branch is an exposed beach and jetty break that benefits from both groundswells and windswells, with optimal surf generated by east to southeast swells and offshore winds from the northwest. It works through most tide stages, though mid to incoming tide often yields the best shape, particularly near the numerous jetties that help focus the waves into cleaner, more workable peaks. Autumn is the prime season, when hurricane swells and crisp offshore winds produce consistently rideable conditions. The spot offers a variety of lefts and rights, but wave power can increase significantly during larger swells. Crowds are common, especially near well-known jetties, and hazards include strong rip currents, submerged rocks, and shifting sandbars.
