Whangamoa in Nelson is a reasonably exposed River Bar break that does not work very often, with spring and summer typically providing the favored conditions for waves. The best conditions occur when a Northwest groundswell combines with an offshore wind direction from the South-southeast. This spot is rarely crowded, but surfers should be cautious as dangerous rips are a known hazard here. Although the spring and summer seasons are generally preferred, the winter months—particularly August—offer the best consistency for clean waves with light or offshore winds.
