Magnets in Nelson - Tasman Bay is an exposed reef break where spring and summer typically provide the favored conditions. The best conditions occur when a Northwest swell (a mix of groundswells and windswells) combines with an offshore wind direction from the Southeast, which also offers some shelter for the break. Despite its classification, it is noted that there is actually no reef break here. Crowds are never a problem, but surfers should beware of hazards like urchins and rocks. While spring and summer are preferred for wave frequency, the most consistent clean waves occur during the winter, particularly in the month of August.
