Local Knowledge
Cable Bay in Nelson - Tasman Bay is a quite exposed point break that has inconsistent surf with no particular seasonal pattern. The best conditions occur when a Northwest swell (a mix of groundswells and windswells) combines with an offshore wind direction from the Southeast, though it offers some shelter from west winds and can remain surfable in light onshore breezes. Despite the point break classification, it is noted there is no actual point break here. When the surf is up, it can get quite busy in the water, and surfers should take care to avoid the rocks. The best time of year for consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of June.
