Local Knowledge & Surf Guide
Local Knowledge
Wedge in Maryland is an exposed beach and reef break known for its inconsistent surf and lack of a clear seasonal pattern. It can pick up both local windswells and distant groundswells, with ideal conditions forming when an east-southeast swell meets offshore winds from the west-northwest. The surf here breaks over both beach and reef, and is unaffected by tidal changes. Despite its name, Wedge is typically uncrowded, even when itβs working. Hazards at this spot include rip currents, sea urchins, and the occasional shark encounter. While it doesn't fire often, the best chance for clean, rideable waves tends to occur during the summer and, interestingly, also in November.
