Assateague in Maryland is an exposed beach break known for its natural, undeveloped shoreline and consistent surf. It catches swells from multiple directions, with tropical systems and strong nor’easters often producing the best waves. Offshore winds from the west clean up the surf, creating peaky lefts and rights across sandbars that shift with storms and seasonal changes. The break works through most tide stages, but mid to high tide usually offers better shape and push. Crowds are generally lighter than in Ocean City, making it a favorite for those seeking a quieter session, though summer beachgoers and wildlife protection zones can limit access. Rip currents and shifting sandbars are common hazards. The most consistent clean waves usually occur in September.
