Local Knowledge
Bathtub Beach in Stuart, Florida is a unique spot with a fragile worm-reef system just offshore. This reef acts as a natural breakwater, creating calm, lagoon-like conditions in the summer and is popular for swimming and snorkeling. However, during the fall and winter, especially with strong nor'easters, tropical storms, or hurricanes, the reef is not sturdy enough to break up the wave energy, leading to strong currents, large waves, and significant beach erosion. Due to these conditions, the beach can be closed for safety and restoration work. This spot is generally not a surfing destination in the traditional sense, as its primary feature is to block waves, making it unsuitable for most surfing activities. The hazards include strong currents during rough conditions and the potential for beach erosion.
