Local Knowledge
La Mata in Valencia is a fairly exposed sandbar beach break that works only occasionally, with no strong seasonal pattern and wave quality largely dependent on local conditions. It mainly picks up east-northeast windswells, though groundswells can reach the break at times, and it works best with offshore winds from the west, as there is little protection from cross-shore breezes. The sandy bottom forms shifting sandbars that tend to produce left-peeling waves, and the surf is generally not tide-dependent. Even when waves are breaking, La Mata is rarely crowded, though surfers should be mindful of lifeguard restrictions. The best month to surf La Mata is September.
