Platja de Fenals is a relatively sheltered beach break that requires a significant swell to function, with the autumn and winter months being the most reliable seasons for waves. It performs best when a strong south or southeast swell combines with offshore winds from the north or northwest. Most of the surf arrives in the form of local windswells, producing a variety of left and right-hand peaks across the coarse sand shoreline. The spot is notably versatile and remains rideable at all stages of the tide, though it often benefits from a rising mid-tide to keep the waves from closing out. While it is rarely excessively crowded due to its inconsistency, the lineup can become busy when a clean swell arrives. Surfers should exercise caution and be mindful of hazards such as a heavy shorebreak due to the steep beach profile and potential strong currents during larger swells. The best conditions reported for surf at Platja de Fenals occur when a South-southeast swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the North.
