Montgat in Catalunia is an exposed sandbar break that does not work very often, with the summer months in particular tending to be flat. The best conditions occur when a southeast short-period windswell—the standard for this location—combines with an offshore wind direction from the northwest. There is no shelter from cross-shore breezes here, but the sandbars provide both left and right-hand waves that are surfable at all stages of the tide. Despite its inconsistency, the spot is often crowded when it is working, and surfers should be particularly mindful of the strong rips present in the area.
