Midshore Bay in Kaikoura is an exposed point break that has fairly consistent surf, although summer tends to be mostly flat. The best conditions occur when a South-southeast swell, which is equally likely to be groundswell or windswell, combines with an offshore wind direction from the North. The break features a left-hand point and performs best around high tide. Even when there are waves, it is not likely to be crowded. The best time of year for surfing Midshore Bay with consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of June.
