Sunset Beach in Orange County is a reasonably exposed sandbar break with fairly consistent surf, favoring summer conditions. The best waves occur when southwest swells align with offshore winds from the northeast, producing both lefts and rights over the sandbar. Although most of the swell comes from distant groundswell, it rarely offers clean surf in January. Despite being typically small, it may still suit beginners occasionally. Crowds are common when it’s breaking, and rips or undertow can pose hazards.
