Steamer Lane–The Slot in Santa Cruz is a fairly exposed reef break with reliable year-round surf, best during winter and especially in January. It features a right-hand reef break that works best on a west swell with offshore winds from the northeast, and benefits from some shelter against northwest winds. The break picks up distant groundswells and is optimal around a rising mid tide. Crowds are common when the surf is good, and surfers should watch out for rocks in the lineup.
