Rockaway in San Mateo is an exposed beach and reef break with reliable surf that works throughout the year. It favors groundswells from the northwest and offshore winds from the southeast, with the best conditions typically around low tide. The break offers primarily right-hand waves, especially on the reef, and can get crowded when the surf is up. Winter, particularly December, delivers the most consistent clean waves with favorable wind and swell conditions. Surfers should be cautious of rips, rocks, pollution, and sharks. Optimal surf occurs when a northwest swell combines with southeasterly offshore winds.
