Refugio in Santa Barbara is a fairly exposed beach and point break known for quite reliable surf, especially during Winter. It performs best with distant groundswells from the west and offshore winds from the north-northeast, offering good waves at all tide stages. The spot is often crowded, attracting many surfers. Hazards include rips, rocks, localism, private access issues, and sharks, so caution is advised. The prime time for consistent clean, rideable waves is Winter, particularly in January.
