Birdrock in San Diego County is an exposed reef break that doesn’t work often but offers good conditions when it does. It works best with west swells and offshore winds from the east-northeast. Summer provides the optimal conditions, though the most consistent clean waves are typically found in winter, especially in January. The spot can get crowded, and surfers should be aware of hazards such as urchins, rocks, and localism.
