Local Knowledge & Surf Guide

Local Knowledge

Big Sur Rivermouth (Andrew Molera State Park) is a semi-point beach break that offers fast, thin right-handers and softer lefts, working best from June through October during low tide when the gravelly sandbar aligns just right. It excels with W to SW swells and easterly offshore winds, with the Big Sur River helping shape the sandbar for consistent, punchy surf. While it's one of Big Sur’s more reliable breaks—often offshore—it can also close out and shift shallow quickly, demanding caution around strong currents and a competitive lineup. Hazards include river bar currents and occasional shark sightings.
