Local Knowledge
La Bocana in Baja Sur is an exposed sandbar and point break that delivers fairly consistent surf, with summer providing the most favorable overall conditions. The break mainly receives distant groundswells, with the ideal swell direction coming from the south–southwest, producing right-hand peeling beach breaks as well as a left-hand point break. The best conditions are reported when a south–southwest swell combines with offshore winds from the northeast, helping shape clean, rideable waves. The spot is rarely crowded, but surfers should remain cautious of hazards such as strong rips and the presence of sharks, with the most consistent clean surf typically occurring in autumn, especially in August.
