πŸ“ Local Knowledge

Smoothwater Bay on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island is an exposed break with very reliable surf that works year-round, offering a left-hand reef break that is surfable at all stages of the tide and rarely crowded. The bay has no shelter from cross-shore breezes, with the best conditions reported when a northwest swell combines with an offshore south-southeast wind, which is also the ideal wind direction for clean waves. The most consistent period for rideable swell with light or offshore winds is during winter, particularly in August. Surfers should remain cautious of strong rips and undertow, rocky hazards, and the presence of sharks.
