πŸ“ Local Knowledge

Okarito Beach on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island is an exposed beach break that picks up plenty of swell and can offer powerful, open-ocean waves with peaks shifting along the shoreline depending on sandbanks and conditions. The best conditions reported for surf at Okarito Beach occur when a West swell combines with an offshore wind direction from the Southeast, allowing cleaner wave faces and better shape. The beach is generally uncrowded, works across various tide stages, and is best suited to confident surfers due to strong rips, changing currents, and the raw nature of the coastline.
