📍 Local Knowledge

Whatarangi Station in The Wairarapa is a reasonably exposed reef break that has quite reliable surf, although summer tends to be mostly flat. The best conditions occur when a South swell, consisting of windswells and groundswells in equal measure, combines with an offshore wind direction from the Northeast. There is no shelter from cross-shore breezes here, and the break is easily blown out by onshore winds. Despite its name, the spot features a reef break (with no beach break) that is not affected by the tide. It is unlikely to be crowded even when the surf is up, though surfers should take care to avoid the rocks.
