📍 Local Knowledge

Whatarangi Bombora in The Wairarapa is an exposed reef and point break that has quite consistent surf, although summer tends to be mostly flat. The best conditions occur when a South swell, consisting of a mix of groundswells and windswells, combines with an offshore wind direction from the Northeast. The location features beach breaks providing both left and right-handers, as well as a left-hand point break, and performs best around a rising mid tide. It is rarely crowded here, though surfers should watch out for rocks. The best time of year for surfing Whatarangi Point and Bombora with consistent, clean waves is during the summer, particularly the month of February
