Propellers in Wellington is an exposed reef break that has unreliable waves with no particular seasonal pattern. The best conditions occur when a South swell, consisting of groundswells and windswells in equal measure, combines with an offshore wind direction from the Northwest. This spot offers some shelter from northwest winds and handles onshore conditions better than most nearby locations. While it features a reef break (contrary to some reports of no reef), surfers should be mindful of rocks in the lineup. It can sometimes get crowded when it is working. The best time of year for surfing Propellers with consistent, clean waves is during autumn, particularly the month of May.
