📍 Local Knowledge

Otakaha Stream in The Wairarapa is an exposed beach break that has fairly consistent surf, although summer tends to be mostly flat. The best conditions occur when a South swell—which is just as likely to be a local windswell as a distant groundswell—combines with an offshore wind direction from the Northeast. There is no shelter here from cross-shore breezes, and the spot is easily blown out by an onshore wind. The beach break provides both left and right-hand waves and is rarely crowded.
