Makara in Wellington is an exposed beach break that offers pretty consistent surf and can work at any time of the year. The best conditions occur when a Northwest swell—with groundswells and windswells being equally likely—combines with an offshore wind direction from the Southeast. The beach break provides both left and right-hand waves and offers good surf at all stages of the tide. When the surf is up, it can get quite busy in the water. The best time of year for surfing Makara with consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of June.
