Lyall Bay-Bombora in Wellington is an exposed reef break that only works when conditions are just right, with summer in particular tending to be flat. The best conditions occur when a South groundswell combines with an offshore wind direction from the North. The spot offers some shelter from northerly winds and remains surfable even in light onshore breezes. The break features a right-hand reef that can be surfable at all stages of the tide. It very rarely gets crowded here, though surfers should watch out for rocks. The best time of year for surfing Lyall Bay-Bombora with consistent, clean waves is during autumn, particularly the month of May.
