Lyall Bay

Lyall Bay in Wellington is a reasonably exposed beach break that does not work very often, with summer in particular tending to be flat. The best conditions occur when a South swell, consisting of windswells and groundswells in equal measure, combines with an offshore wind direction from the North. The beach break offers both left and right-hand waves, and there is also a left-hand point break; both provide good surf at all stages of the tide. It can sometimes be crowded when the surf is up. The best time of year for surfing Lyall Bay with consistent, clean waves is during the winter, particularly the month of June.
